Every year on Australia Day we celebrate a special group of people. This special event has been happening since 1960. This award is very special for it is given to great people, men and women who have made a difference within our community. These are great role models and have provided a lot of great things for our country.
There are four sections to the Australian of the Year.
Australian of the Year
Senior Australian of the Year
Young Australian of the Year
and
Australian Local Hero of the Year
Here are some excellent examples of Australian of the year winners.
Dawn Fraser who is a triple Olympic Gold Medallist was Australian of the year in 1964
Sir Edward Dunlop was Australian of the year in 1976. Another one was Jessica Watson who sailed around the world non stop without any assistance. Please check out this web site to find out more about Jessica Watson’s life and her journey as a solo sailer.

Do you know any outstanding Role Models?
Why are they such outstanding Role Models?

By: Mrs Kathleen Morris on February 17, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Dear BB,
4KM and 4KJ have been following the adventures of a role model called Alastair Humphreys. He is not Australian (he is from England) but he is doing an amazing thing by rowing across the Atlantic ocean to raise money for charity.
Last week 4KM and 4KJ received a phone call from Alastair in the middle of the ocean! Rowing for 60 days straight is hard work but he doesn’t give up. It’s a bit like you with your blogging. It is hard work but you never give up!
Who knows, maybe you will be an Australian of the Year one day!
Happy weekend,
Mrs M☀rris

Dear Mrs Morris,
Awesome comment and thank you for leaving a comment on my blog.
Wow that is amazing how Alastair Humphreys is raising money for charity.
Wow rowing for 60 days is a lot of hard work I am not sure I could row for 60 days. That is a wonderful effort he is doing.
Mrs Morris I do not think I will be an Australian of the Year.
From your pal,
BB.

BB,
That is so interesting that Australia does that. Here in America, we do not have America Day. However, the heros here are definitely celebrated with other holidays. People who do something outstanding will get their recognition. Sometimes those outstanding people will get recognized locally or even nationally.
There are so many people in America that I can think of that deserve to be called a hero. I can share with you my own personal hero, my mom. She has provided so much for me in my life that nobody else ever could. She has always been supportive and available in my life.
I enjoyed reading your this blog post and the link you posted. Great post!

@ Katie,
Awesome comment and thank you for leaving a comment on my blog.
That is great your mum is your hero. She sounds like a great hero and a great lady.
Mums are great role models because they are always willing to support their children.
My dad is a great role model too. He always fixes things for me and helps me.
Hope to hear from you again.
Sincerely,
BB.

Dear BB,
You have written an interesting post about the Australian of the Year. It must be incredibly difficult to chose a single person for this honor.
As others have said, we don’t have this award in the US. However, there is a magazine who has a issue with the Person of the Year. Time Magazine publishes this, yet the person isn’t always American.
Sorry I haven’t been timely to comment. We were out of town on a ski vacation and when I returned I was extremely busy at school. Blogging had to take a back seat for a few days.

@ Mrs Hembree,
Awesome comment and thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. It is always so wonderful to hear from you.
I agree it would be difficult to just pick one person to be Australian of the year.
I find it interesting that American’s don’t pick a person of each year.
Mrs Hembree it does not matter you have not have had time to catch up with my blog as I have been busy too.
How wonderful that you went on a Ski holiday that would be just awesome.
Do you go to the same place every winter to ski Mrs Hembree?
From your friend always,
Bianca

@ Alex,
Great to read your comment once again.
You asked a very good question about what season we are having. We are coming to the end of our summer here in Australia.
These last few days have been so awful with the heat and the hot winds.
I don’t really like the summer, I much rather prefer winter.
Do you have a favourtie season Alex?
Hope to hear from you again.
From your friends in Australia,
AA and Bianca
By: Alex on February 26, 2012 at 12:18 pm
Dear AA and BB,
My favorite season is summer and winter because summer is fun day. There’s street markets, outside swimming, and my favorite you get to drink cool drinks like Slurpees. Winter you play in the snow,no school,go sledding, enjoy hot coco, make a snowman and make make snow angles. One thing I hate about summer is that when it gets to hot you go crazy. Example. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I wan t to go swimming. I am not yelling at you AA and BB it is just an example. Hope I get a comment back from you. I wonder when is AA’s birthday.
You friend Alex.
P.s. Are you out of School?
By: aa and bb on February 26, 2012 at 1:53 pm
@ Alex,
What an awesome comment you wrote.
Your really have given me some great examples of why you like the summer time and why you like the winter time.
Here where we live we don’t get the snow for if we want to see and play in the snow we must travel to certain parts in Victoria to enjoy the snow. But when I lived on a farm, it would snow I have to say like you I like to build a snowman and sometimes even two.
Alex my birthday was in January Mrs Hembree and other fellow bloggers put up a special post. I am pretty sure Mrs Hembree may have a link so you might like to check it out if you like.
BB has just started back at school. What about you Alex when do you finish school and start your summer holidays?
From your friends down under,
AA and BB.
